ABA Marrickville - Group Activities

Breastfeeding Counsellors
Breastfeeding Counsellors are mothers who have breastfed their own babies and trained extensively with ABA. Marrickville Group has four counsellors, one of them is present at every meeting to answer any questions and are available on the phone at other times.

Breast Pump Hire
We have a number of electric breast pumps which can be hired by both Members ($15 for one week) and non-members ($30 per week). A milk collection kit, which can be used as a manual pump, is necessary and can be purchased through ABA. A security deposit is also charged. ABA breast pumps are always hired out by a Breastfeeding Counsellor, who can help with reassurance and information. Please contact Lynne for more information.

To celebrate our National Conference in August this year, we have produced this lovely scarf. For only $35 it is a must have for breastfeeding advocates everywhere.

Our Library
Currently there are about 40 books held in the library for borrowing by members. There is some excellent reading for breastfeeding mothers and parents of all stages, from detailed texts to handbook style publications. They cover many different topics including breastfeeding, night-time parenting, games for children, learning and nutrition.

For the new and expectant mother we have some excellent breastfeeding books such as ABA's own Breastfeeding Naturally, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding from La Leche League (the ABA equivalent in the USA), a wonderful book called Bestfeeding by Fisher, Renfrew and Arms and Breastfeeding ... I Can do That by Suzanne Cox.

As time goes by you might be interested to read Mothering your Nursing Toddler or The Nursing Mothers Guide to Weaning or Easy Toilet Training.

If you are interested in the social and cultural history of breastfeeding in Australia and elsewhere you could enjoy The Politics of Breastfeeding by Gabrielle Palmer or Breastfeeding Matters by Maureen Minchin.

Community Education
Our counsellors and Community Educators promote breastfeeding awareness through talks to community groups and school visits, as well as providing information sessions for groups of new mothers. School visits usually include a demonstration of bathing as well as feeding the baby.

Breastfeeding Classes
In 2007 our seventh year, ABA presents breastfeeding and early parenting sessions in the Inner West and Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.

Sales
Our group stocks some of the Mother's Direct range of products - a full catalogue can be seen on the Mothers Direct website. You can also purchase some ABA books and booklets through the group. For any sales enquiries please contact Lynne.

What else do we do?
We produce a quarterly Bulletin which contains our meeting dates, group news and some articles. Some of the Bulletin is reproduced on this webpage, including the dates and times of our meetings.

Please contact Lisa if you would like more information on any of the above.
